William C. Henke a generous and prominent civic leader skilled in the butcher trade established Fredericksburg’s first uptown meat market on the front porch of this, his hand-hewn stone building. Built in 1888, the date carved in the limestone lintel above the front doorway. Meat quarters in sacks were hung from the porch ceiling and sections sold to customers standing on the sidewalk. In the city, meat was delivered in a covered roof wagon with clinking bell, drawn by two horses, named Fuchs and Iris. The rural area was served by a employed rider on horseback. William C. Henke married Emma Schneider, July 6, 1886. Their 10 children were born in this home and it remained in the Henke family for nearly 60 years.

This building was bought and restored in 1948 by the John and Dorothea (Weinheimer) Cotter family, stimulating the preservation of old homes and buildings in beautiful historic Fredericksburg.
