Near the entrance to the Purdy Cemetery, this is a tall gray granite marker which reads:

Purdy Cemetery
On November 2, 2001, the
descendants of James Franklin
& Sarahann Sophronia Graham
donated 5.27 acres to the
Purdy Cemetery Association
more than doubling the
original size of the cemetery.

A brief history of the Purdy Cemetery
The town of Purdy began in 1892,
with the establishment of a
U.S. post office
on November 5, 1901.
The Choctaw and Chickasaw Nations
deeded 5 acres on this spot to
the town of Purdy for use as
a cemetery.
For the first 50 years the
cemetery was maintained by
members of the community.
In 1950 the Purdy Homemaker's
Extension Club assumed
maintenance of the cemetery,
a task which they performed
heroically for approximately
40 years.

The town of Purdy ceased to
exist in 1953 and on May 5, 1989
it was legally dissolved.
The Purdy Cemetery Association
was formed on November 5, 1990
for the purpose of owning and
maintaining the cemetery. The
cemetery is funded entirely
by donations.
