NOTE: The coordinates shown above are for the turn-off from Highway 18, about 10 miles south of Chickasha. Take the turn-off about one-quarter mile south, then turn east on 1487 Road.
The name Agawam is pronounced by the locals "Egg-Wom". It is the name of a Native American tribe located in eastern Essex County, Massachusetts during Colonial days. This town was given the name by a New England train engineer. It means "Fish Drying Place".
Agawam had a post office from 1909 to 1918. Located along the Rock Island railroad tracks, it once was a viable town, with a school, general store, and a few commercial buildings. Today, there are just a few remaining residents and no community as such.
Out on the highway, is a brick gymnasium on the west side of the road, which is known as the Agawam Gym. It was constructed of red brick by the WPA in 1935 and was in use until the school ceased operation in 1957. For more information and photos, visit Agawam Gym
