We should have known when we visited George M. Steinbrenner Field that a New York team would never forget to honor those who died on September 11, 2001. And we weren't disappointed when we saw the shiny twin towers displayed prominently in front of the stadium next to Monument Park.

Text on the memorial:
More than 3,000 men and women lost their lives on September 11, 2001. This monument is dedicated to all of them, their families, the men and women fighting the War on Terror and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The grass surrounding the monument represents themen and women who lost their lives in Somerset County, Pennsylvania on United Airlines Flight 93. The foundation of the monument is in the shape of the Pentagon in Washington DC. It is dedicated to the men and women who were in the Pentagon and lost their lives, as well as those on American Airlines Flight 77 which crashed into the Pentagon. The two steel towers represent the World Trade Center, the victims in the Towere also represent the men and women on American Airline Flight 11, which crashed into the World Trade Center's North Tower at 8:46 a.m., and United Airlines Flight 175, which hit the South Tower at 9:03 a.m.

The piece of steel, as part of this monument in front of the Twin Towers is an actual portion of the World Trade Center. It was donated to be a part of this monument by the Gene O'Kane Division, Retired Firefighters of New York City, Palm Harbor.
