FR La plus ancienne mention du Miracle des Cloches dont nous allons voir qu'elle est à l'origine de l'existence de notre carillon, date de 1665, et nous est rapportée de façon succinte dans La vie de saint Mary de l'abbé de Piolle.

« Le corps du saint feut transporté par Arnoux Evesque à la ville de Forcalquier, afin que ce sacré depost feust inconnu aux barbares. » Il écrit plus loin, à propos des eaux miraculeuses de la fontaine de saint Mari, « qui sont souveraines pour la guérison des fievres » : « on dit par tradition que cette fontaine sortit miraculeusement pour désaltérer celui qui portait les sacrées reliques de notre saint. pour preuve de cette vérité on à dressé l'oratoire de saint Mary, qui se voit encore près de cette fontaine (NDE : les deux s'y voient toujours) ; & on ajoute que pendant que le dépositaire de ce précieux dépôt se délassait, les cloches donnèrent d'elles mêmes avis au peuple de son arrivée, afin qu'il allait recevoir avec toute la vénération possible, celui qui devait être son protecteur, & son ange tutélaire. »

Or, au début du XXe siècle, les Missionnaires de Notre-Dame de Provence, qui occupaient et animaient les lieux, se souvenaient fort bien de cette tradition. Ils souhaitèrent donc fêter avec le plus d'éclat possible le millénaire de l'arrivée des reliques de saint Mari à Forcalquier. Et puisque c'étaient des cloches qui en avaient annoncé l'arrivée, ils voulurent que le plus grand nombre de cloches possible célèbre ce millième anniversaire (et accessoirement le cinquantenaire de l'édification de Notre-Dame de Provence). Jugeant sans doute que toutes les cloches de la ville n'y suffiraient pas, ils firent construire un carillon sur le plateau où s'élevait jadis le château qui avait accueilli les reliques. Et en 1925, ses 19 cloches purent carillonner allègrement : on n'a pas tous les jours mille ans !

En 1939 les cloches sont retirées et mises à disposition de la maison Paccard qui avait découvert le procédé permettant d'accorder exactement les cloches entre elles. Celles du nouveau carillon ne se retrouvèrent alors plus que 15, qui prirent place dans un nouvel édicule, toujours accompagnées du si bémol en volée. Quant aux trois absentes, on peut supposer qu'elles servirent à payer le prix de la refonte.

En 2015, l’usure de la mécanique (et notamment de la tringlerie, que les carillonneurs devaient sans cesse réparer avec des bouts de fil de fer) les a contraints à cesser de jouer.

En 2018, les cloches de 1939, accompagnées de nouvelles sont au nombre de 37 pour permettre de jouer et d'apprendre à jouer sur 3 octaves.

However, at the beginning of the 20th century, the Missionaries of Notre-Dame de Provence, who occupied and animated the place, remembered this tradition very well. They therefore wished to celebrate as brightly as possible the millennium since the arrival of the relics of Saint Mari in Forcalquier. And since it was bells that had announced its arrival, they wanted as many bells as possible to celebrate this thousandth anniversary (and incidentally the fiftieth anniversary of the building of Notre-Dame de Provence). Probably judging that not all the bells in the city would be enough, they had a carillon built on the plateau where the castle that had hosted the relics once stood. And in 1925, its 19 bells could ring cheerfully: it is not every day a thousand years old!

In 1939 the bells were removed and made available to the Paccard company, which had discovered the process of precisely matching the bells together. Those of the new carillon were then only 15, which took their place in a new aedicula, always accompanied by the B flat in flight. As for the three missing ones, it can be assumed that they were used to pay the price of the redesign.

In 2015, the wear and tear on the mechanics (and in particular the linkage, which the carillonneurs had to repair with bits of wire) forced them to stop playing.

In 2018, there are 37 bells from 1939, with new ones to play and learn to play on 3 octaves.

Structure: At the top of the hill, in front of the Notre Dame de Provence chapel, the carillon is visible from all over the city but can be approached very closely on the public space. It is protected by concrete reinforcement and armoured glass.
