"Millennium Greens are areas of green space for the benefit of local communities. 245 were created in cities, towns and villages across England to celebrate the turn of the Millennium. Their creation was funded in part by the National Lottery via the Countryside Agency. Each one is different, as local people have had an input into the design of their green.
The project to create 250 Millennium Greens across the turn of the Millennium (2000/2001) was started in 1996 and ended when the last Green was handed over to its own, local charitable trust in perpetuity. Each trust now fundraises for and runs its own green, within the bounds of its trust deed, for the benefit of its local community."

The Way For The Millennium is a 45 km long distance footpath, cycle route and horse riding trail, that was also created for the Millennium.
At this point the route follows the Stafford to Telford Greenway, a former railway line, now a rails to trails route.
An information board near the entrance to the green has the following information about this particular Millennium Green
Derrington Millennium Green exists today as a fine example of what can be achieved within a community, if people work together to fulfil their hopes and dreams.
Back in 1998 when this 11.5 acre field, along with a neighbouring 23.5 acre field, (which is now Duddas Wood) were put up for sale by a local farmer, only a small group of enthusiastic villagers believed they could achieve their goal, which was to purchase both fields and transform them into areas that would benefit people, the village, nature and the environment.
After much discussion and on the trust of a handshake, the farmer gave the group of enthusiasts twelve months to see if they could raise the money and purchase the land.
There was, of course, some initial scepticism amongst many people that this sizeable task could not be achieved, but as the unique joint project developed, and the vigorous fundraising campaign gained momentum, more and more people and organisations pledged their support. The end result was that we raised a staggering £220,000 pounds, which enabled the purchase of all of the land, and creation of both incredible projects.
Although it took every day of the twelve months we had been given to raise the funds, plus an exhausting amount of time and hard work, we never stopped believing we could succeed.
