"The hard circus of Châlons-sur-Marne, which at its beginnings included 2300 seats, had been built to accommodate comedy interludes, pantomimes, acrobatics and equestrian shows.
And it is to facilitate the movement of the horses, that the architect Louis Gillet gave him this circular form. Designed in 1892, started in 1898, the Circus was inaugurated on April 16, 1899.
Designed for circus shows, it also hosts a variety of events such as fencing, boxing, gymnastics, wrestling, wrestling ... During the First World War, it even serves as a camouflage workshop or warehouse for gas masks.
From the 1920s, part of the building hosts a cinema. In 1938, the circus goes under municipal control. In 1984, under the leadership of the architect Jean-Louis Gouzier it is transformed into a school dedicated to the Circus Arts.
In 2010, the restoration work of the circus begins and will allow the building to find the original colors and decorations and make it evolve so that it can adapt to the new requirements of the School.
It was also an opportunity to bring the circus to today's safety and hospitality standards: of the 837 seats available in the stands, 12 are reserved for people with disabilities."
