The GR 654 takes the Voie de Vézelay from Namur to Vézelay then its route follows that of Via Lemovicensis to Montreal-du-Gers. He joins the GR 65, another path that continues to Spain to reach the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Going up the Meuse and the Marne, crossing the Ardennes forest, then the vineyards of Champagne and Burgundy, the pilgrims German and Flemish were numerous to take the way of Vézelay to go to Compostelle.
This route is punctuated with famous sites classified as World Heritage by UNESCO as for example: The Collegiate Church Notre-Dame en Vaux of Châlons-en-Champagne.
Le GR 654 emprunte la Voie de Vézelay de Namur à Vézelay puis son tracé suit celui de la Via Lemovicensis jusque Montréal-du-Gers. Il y rejoint le GR 65, autre chemin qui continue vers l’Espagne pour atteindre la cathédrale de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.
Remontant la Meuse et la Marne, traversant la forêt ardennaise, puis les vignobles champenois et bourguignons, les pèlerins allemands et flamands furent nombreux à emprunter la voie de Vézelay pour se rendre à Compostelle.
Cet itinéraire est jalonné de sites célèbres classés au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO comme par exemple: La collégiale Notre-Dame en Vaux de Châlons-en-Champagne.
