"The community's namesake, Lt. Col. T. Ellwood Zell of Philadelphia, first made his winter home in Zellwood in 1876, about a decade after he and two other Union officers founded the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.
Zell and his comrades, who met in Zell's Philadelphia office, were among those preparing for Lincoln's funeral cortege in Philadelphia during the train trip that carried the fallen president's body back to Springfield, Ill., for burial in 1865.
At its peak in the 1890s, the group they founded had more than 8,000 members and inspired John Philip Sousa to write "The Loyal Legion March" in its honor.
After the war, Zell became a prominent Philadelphia publisher and donated books to Zellwood's first lending library, begun in 1885."
