Mesto Uherský Brod, jedno z nejstarších sídel jihovýchodní Moravy, se nachází v príhranicní oblasti moravsko-slovenského pomezí, v podhurí nejvyšší hory Bílých Karpat, Javoriny. Pocátky historického osídlení Uherského Brodu, jehož puvodní jméno "Na Brode" pripomíná brod pres reku Olšavu, sahají do 10.–12. století. Puvodní osada pravdepodobne ležela v jižní cásti nynejšího vnitrního mesta, v okolí tzv. dolního kostela sv. Jana Krtitele a tvorila duležitou pomezní pevnost na hranici Moravy a Uherského státu.
