SABBATICAL WORSHIP TOUR ST. MARK’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, PORTLAND, MISSOURI
"Pilgrimage: A journey or search of moral or spiritual significance.

"Twelve Grace parishioners made a pilgrimage to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Portland, Missouri on Sunday morning, July 20th. Celebrant Fr. Marshall Crossnoe’s sermon centered on the Gospel Reading from Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43. Fr. Crossnoe informed us that the passage fit well with his preparation for an upcoming course on contemporary religion and ethics that he will be teaching at Lincoln University, and we were getting a preview!

"One of St. Mark’s parishioners commented on how much she enjoyed the addition of twelve more voices joyfully singing the hymns. From my perspective, I think all in attendance enjoyed singing the familiar hymns in the small space where our voices seemed to fill and reverberate.

"Afterward the St. Mark’s parishioners graciously invited all to partake of refreshments before the return trip to Jefferson City." ~ by Dennis Belcher

"The side steeple property type is another variation on the gable-end church. Like the gable-end and center steeple church types, these buildings are generally rectangular in shape with the entrance in the broad gable end. The defining characteristic of the sidesteeple church is the tower located at one corner of the façade, or attached to one side. Gottfried and Jennings note that the entrance is generally located in the tower, though this is not universally so in Callaway County where in two cases, the entrance has historically been centered in the façade.

"As a class in Callaway County, side steeple churches were constructed using a variety of materials and examples can be found in frame, brick, and rusticated concrete block. One masonry example, the Mokane United Methodist Church, also extensively used pressed metal panels on the gable ends, tower and roof. All examples in Callaway County have some Late Victorian details, and most have Gothic pointed arch windows. Common alterations to these buildings include additions to the rear or side and the application of modern siding and/or installation of new windows." ~ Missouri Department of Natural Resources
