The last survivor of Ludlow’s seven medieval gates, probably completed about 1270. Despite considerable later rebuilding, the original structure of gate arch and the two drum towers flanking a central passage (cf Edward I’s castles in Wales) can be seen from the south elevation. On the north side is a 16th to 18th century house built over the Gate with Gothick crenellations and details probably by Pritchard for Dr Samuel Sprott who died in 1760. A portcullis groove and arrow slit can be seen under the arch. The The west drum tower is now partially obscured by Regency Gothick additions of 1824-9.

The cut mark and rivet is on the south-west side of the gate, low down on the last masonry block of the foundations. It's quite worn but still recognisable, 0.3m above ground, last verified in 1971 at 86.886m above the Newlyn datum.
