This is the western portal of the tunnel. The tunnel was built in 1792 and it is 1230yds (1125m) long and passes 131ft (40m) below ground. Part of the tunnel collapsed in 1932 and you can no longer pass all the way through it. The tunnel has a locked gate because it is home to many species of bat and has been classed as a site of special scientific interest.
If you park on the main road in Greywell or in the Fox and Goose pub car-park you can reach the tunnel entrance by taking the footpath at co-ordinates N51 15.259 W000 58.492
