Located at Gin and School House Roads, the 1939 Newport School building was constructed with help from the WPA, and it still serves Newport as a community center. You can still ring the bell!

It's a school bell, nothing fancy, mounted on a metal yoke with a rope that looks like it's receiving regular care. There's no reason to believe this bell wasn't used by the school when classes were still held here.

The school itself was designed by Voelcker & Dixon, out of Wichita Falls, whose legacy includes quite a few buildings still with us in Texas, some of them on the National Register of Historic Places. This three classroom schoolhouse was the last in a succession of school buildings in Newport, several of them basic log structures. This ranch-style rock school has a sliding partition that divides two of its three classrooms, creating an auditorium for special events. The Living New Deal website notes that the Works Progress Administration funded $5,762 of the approximate $9,000 cost of construction.
