LANSING CITY MARKET Dancing and fiddling heralded the opening of the Lansing City Market on August 25, 1938. Built by the Granger Construction Company, and partly financed by the Works Progress Administration and the Public Works Administration, the market typifies Depression-era municipal projects. The first city-sponsored market opened at North Grand Avenue and East Shiawassee Street in 1909 after the North Side Commercial Club blocked off Turner Street twice a week and showed the city council that a farmers' market could succeed.

Desription of Market: The Lansing City market consists of two, one-story, parallel, brick structures trimmed in grey concrete, joined by a two story, horizontal brick building, forming an "H". the buildings are faced in dark reddish-brown clay brick, fired in nearby Grand Ledge. Twelve light sash windows appear beneath the parapets, sandwiched between concrete piers topped by simple medalion reliefs. The market underwent a major renovation in 1975 including re-roofing, the attachment of metal overhangs above the stall entrances, and the installation of a glass enclosure on the building's north facade. A 60-foot Toledo Weight Scale, installed in 1939, is an unusual object located in the cross-bar section of the market.
