Albert I (8 april 1875 - 17 februari 1934) regeerde van 1909 tot 1934 als de derde koning der Belgen. Dit was een bewogen periode in de geschiedenis van België, waaronder de periode van de Eerste Wereldoorlog (1914-1918), toen 90 procent van België werd overspoeld, bezet en geregeerd door het Duitse Rijk.
Dit monument kwam er naar aanleiding van de 50ste verjaardag van het overlijden van koning Albert I, die verongelukte te Marche-les-Dames. Maar het herinnert ons ook aan de soldaten die tussen de beide wereldoorlogen vielen.
Het beeld werd op 17 februari 1984 onthuld door de heer Smeyers, toenmalig nationaal beheerder en voorzitter van de afdeling Hasselt van de veteranen.

Albert I (8 April 1875 – 17 February 1934) reigned as the third King of the Belgians from 1909 to 1934. This was an eventful period in the history of Belgium, which included the period of World War I (1914–1918), when 90 percent of Belgium was overrun, occupied, and ruled by the German Empire.
This monument came after the 50th anniversary of the death of King Albert I, who died in Marche-les-Dames. But it also reminds us of the soldiers who fell between the two world wars.
The statue was unveiled on February 17, 1984 by Mr. Smeyers, then national administrator and chairman of the Hasselt department of the veterans.
