The bath was constructed around the middle of the 2nd century A.D. It was abandonded after 248 A.D.

The first excavation was made in 1893 by the Reichslimeskommission. In 1972 and 1974, further excavations occurred under the auspices of the Landesdenkmalamt. In 1975, the city of Schwäbisch Gmund opened the site to the public and in 1999 it was renovated from the ground up.
