In 1214, the first mention was made of a castle on this site. The document in question involved a battle between Frederick II and Otto IV, with Frederik taking this castle. Henry I of Brabant, who fought on the side of Otto, surrendered to Frederik here.

In 1346 the castle was destroyed by the militia of Tongeren, Dinant and Huy in their fight against prince-bishop Engelbert III van der Mark of Liège. In 1364 the lord of Hamal chose the side of Arnold van Rummen in his fight against prince-bishop Jan van Arkel. Again the castle was destroyed, now by Liège troops. Also in 1676 the castle was partly destroyed, this time by troops of the Republic. After the Battle of Lafelt (1747), King Louis XV of France stayed at the castle for six weeks.
