Leeds Bradford was originally known as Yeadon Airfield, when a club moved there in 1931. The first commercial flights took place in 1935 to Newcastle, Edinburgh, Blackpool and the Isle of Man.
In 1936, the 609 squadron of the RAF was formed there. Civil flight activities ceased in 1939 with the beginning of the Second World War. The neighboring Avro plant was used to produce military equipment and resulted in significant infrastructure development. Yeadon became an important test site for military aircraft produced. Civil flights will not resume until 1947.
In 1953, Yeadon Aviation Ltd was created. Two years later, Belfast, Jersey, Ostend, Southend, the Isle of Wight and Düsseldorf are added to the list of proposed destinations. Flights to London and Dublin begin in 1960.
In 1978, in order to elevate the airport to a regional airport, it was decided to increase the size of the runway. Work began in 1982.
The first large aircraft to operate from the new facilities was a Boeing 767 from Britannia Airways to Las Palmas in 1985.
In the 1980s, a transatlantic link between Leeds Bradford and Toronto was operated by a Boeing 747 from Canadian company Wardair.
In 1989, a visit of the Concorde attracted more than 60,000 people to the airport.
Work since 1996 has increased the size of the terminal. The original track 09/27, closed on October 6, 2005, is today a taxiway.

Leeds Bradford était initialement connu sous le nom d'aérodrome de Yeadon, quand un club s'y installa en 1931. Les premiers vols commerciaux eurent lieu en 1935 à destination de Newcastle, Édimbourg, Blackpool et l'île de Man.
En 1936, l'escadron 609 de la RAF y est formé. Les activités de vols civils cessèrent en 1939 avec le début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. L'usine Avro voisine des installations fut utilisée afin de produire du matériel militaire et entraîna un développement significatif des infrastructures. Yeadon devint un important site de test des appareils militaires produits. Les vols civils ne reprendront pas avant 1947.
