The pub is a Wetherspoons pub, who often name their pubs after something of local historical interest.

Joseph Bramah (13 April 1748 – 9 December 1814), was born in Barnsley and after serving an apprenticeship with a carpenter nearby moved to London seeking his fortune.

He went on to became a successful and famous engineer who became a prolific inventor.

Appropriately for this pub he had a number of patents relating to brewing and beer pumps.
