THE SOUL AND CENTER OF ACTION IN THE COMMUNITY WAS, AND STILL IS,
ITS CHURCHES AND THEIR MINISTRY. THOSE WHO SERVED INCLUDE:
REV. NORMAN RANSOM McNAIR CAME TO MOUNT DORA IN 1946 AND WAS THEFOUNDER OF BETHEL FREE METHODIST CHURCH WHERE HE SERVED FOR 24 YEARS. WITH HIS
WIFE ,QUEEN, THEY WORKED TIRELESSLY FOR NEEDED SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CHANGES.
REV. JEROME ANDREWS WAS BORN IN 1911 IN APOPKA, ATTENDED SCHOOL IN
MOUNT DORA, AND WORKED IN THE ORANGE GROVES WITH HIS FATHER. AT AGE 30 HE
BECAME A MINISTER OF GOD, PREACHING IN MANY CENTRAL FLORIDA COMMUNITIES.
LIKE OTHER MINISTERS OF THE GOSPEL, HE HELD A SECOND JOB OPERATING A POPULAR
GROCERY STORE.REV.ANDREWS WAS STILL PASTORING AT AGE 98.
REV ARTHUR LORENZO RUSSELL LED THE CONGREGATION OF ST. MARY’S BAPTIST
CHURCH FOR CLOSE TO THIRTY YEARS WHICH GREW INTO THE LARGEST AFRICAN-AMERICAN
CHURCH IN MOUNT DORA.
