BORN IN 1886 IN GEORGIA, MAMIE LEE GILBERT BECAME A PROMIENT
COMMUNITY LEADER IN MOUNT DORA. IN 1925 SHE SPEARHEADED THE DRIVE FOR THE
NEW SCHOOL, MILNER-ROSENWALD ACADEMY. FOR 50 YEARS SHE SERVED AS
SUNDAY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT AT SAINT MARY’S BAPTIST CHURCH. SHE ALSO
INSTITUTED THE ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT, FOUNDED THE HELPING HAND CLUB,
SERVED A CHAIR OF THE LAKE COUNTY NAACP, WROTE A NEWS COLUMN FOR THE
MOUNT DORA TOPIC AND ENHANCED THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN MOUNT DORA IN MANY
WAYS DURING HER 90 YEAR LIFETIME.

IN HONOR OF NANCY PAGE
AN ESCAPED SLAVE, NANCY PAGE REACHED MOUNT DORA IN THE
MID-1870’S WHERE SHE BECAME A PROPERTY OWNER AND BUSINESS WOMAN
IN THE CITRUS INDUSTRY.

IN HONOR OF MATTIE GAMBLE
MATTIE GAMBLE WAS THE FIRST CERTIFIED MIDWIFE IN MOUNT DORA. SHE
DELIVERED MOST OF THE BABIES IN EAST TOWN UNTIL THE 1950’S.
