BORN IN MOUNT DORA, DR. R. EUGENE BURLEY WAS PART OF THE MOVEMENT TO INTERGRATE CITY HALL AND THE HIRING OF THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN CHIEF OF POLICE. DR. BURLEY SERVED AS THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCEBOARD AND CHAIRMAN OF THE LIBRARY BOARD.AS CHAIRMAN OF THE NORTHEAST COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE FROM 2000-2005. HE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE REDEVELOPMENT OF GRANDVIEW STREET BUSINESS DISTRICT AND FRANK BROWN PARK.
