The Waco Mammoth National Monument became part of the National Park Service in 2015 and is one of our newest National Monuments. This site is the the only site in the United States where fossils a herd of Columbian Mammoths have been discovered. It is believed that the fossils currently uncovered was a nursery herd, which roamed the area some 67,000 years ago. This site was discovered in 1978 when two local resident discovered a large bone and took it to Baylor University to have it analyzed. Experts at Baylor identified the bone as coming from a Columbian Mammoth. Under the guidance of Baylor University digging at the site began. Between 1978 and 1990 a total of 16 mammoths were discover. Since then several other fossils and remains have been discovered including a large male mammoth, an additional female and two juveniles along with a camel. Today visitors can tour the dig site, which is protected inside a large climate controlled building. Visitors should begin their visit at the small visitors center where they will be escorted to the dig site.
