The City of Pittsburg describes the park as "a great place to take a break from sightseeing and shopping", and that's about right, although waymarkers will continue their sightseeing for a few things that are to be found here. There's no artwork, no statues, no playground, although part of the park is open space where the kids can play. There's a bench where one can take some time out and watch things happening along Quitman Street, the main drag through town. A small gazebo sees occasional use for community events, and there are several memorials and awards for community achievement. A plaque at the front of the park notes its benefactors, in memory of their parents:

Pendergrass Park

Site donated to the loving citizens of Pittsburg by Robert K. Pendergrass and Mary Smith Pendergrass in thanksgiving for the exemplary lives of our parents:

Lee Roy Pendergrass
Helena Slezinksy Pendergrass
Henry Smith
Jewell Tate Smith

At the other end of the park, in front of the gazebo, is a 1991 Texas Historical Marker that provides some community history:

Anglo settlement of this area began in the 1850s. The W.H. Pitts (1815-1898) family arrived from Georgia in 1854, and soon were joined by more settlers from the southern United States. Pitts donated land for a townsite, which was named in his honor. In 1874, when Camp County was created from Upshur County, Pittsburg became county seat. Two railroad lines were built through the area by 1880, and in 1891 the citizens voted to incorporate their town. Pittsburg continues to serve as a transportation, business, marketing, and cultural center for the county.
