"After the death of her husband Henry, in 1895, Mrs. Susan Lorenz purchased the Redding property bounded by Yuba, California, and Placer Streets and the railroad tracks. The family's enterprise in Trinity County was the huge Red Hill Placer Mine of Junction City. Profit from the mine was used to finance the four story brick building on her new lot. The bricks came from the Holt & Gregg Co in Anderson. Mrs. Lorenz had to drain Carter Lake, a two acre aswale former by Calaboose Creek. When completed in 1902, the 132 room hotel became a landmark for the thousands of travelers on the railroad and residences for families of men who worked local copper mines of the day. The spacious dinning room boasted 75 tables. Small stores lined the ground floor at the front of the building. The Hotel sustained three fires in 1925, 1929, and 1937. Mrs. Lorenz was ahead of her time as a businesswoman and entrepreneur. Susan Leibrant Lorenz, mother of 9 surviving children from a family of 12, died at age 81, April 3 1925. In 1973, the Lorenz family closed the hotel and sold it in 1975. By 1978, new owners opened the hotel for senior citizen living. USDHUD bought the hotel in 1991 and spent 5 million dollars on renovations. The hotel is currently managed by Christian Church Homes and is open for senior housing, The building was listen on the National Register of Historic Places, March 19, 2012."
