Die Geschichte des Kagraner Pavillons

Im Sommer des Jahres 1998 wurde ein Mitarbeiter der MA 42 - Wiener Stadtgärten, Abteilung Baumschutz in den Garten Cobenzlgasse 109 beordert - ein Routinebesuch wegen einer Baumentfernung. Der Besitzer des Grundstückes, Herr Friedrich Gross, konnte dabei mit einer Überraschung aufwarten. Auf seinem Anwesen befand sich ein Originalpavillon von der Wiener Weltausstellung 1873.
125 Jahre hatten der Holz-Metall-Konstruktion arg zugesetzt, in seiner Grundsubstanz war das Bauwerk jedoch noch erhalten. Nach Erzählungen von Herrn Gross stand das Salettl mit den drei Dächern und dem eigenwillig kunstvoll geformten Wetterhahn früher in unmittelbarer Nähe der Rotunde, auf dem heutigen Messegelände im Prater. Es dürfte dort wohl den ganzen Glanz der Weltausstellung miterlebt haben. Welche Verwendung das Bauwerk hatte, konnte leider noch nicht geklärt werden. Möglich wäre, dass der Pavillon in einem Nationengarten gestanden ist. Eine andere Möglichkeit wäre die Nutzung als Musik- oder Kaffeehauspavillon.

Die Renovierung des Gebäudes hätte eine größere Geldsumme erfordert, die eine Privatperson nur sehr schwer investieren kann. Wäre aber nicht bald etwas geschehen, das brüchige Holz hätte wohl nicht mehr lange gehalten. Um das Kunstwerk vor dem Verfall zu retten, entschloss sich Herr Gross dankenswerterweise, den Pavillon der Stadt Wien zu überlassen.
Auf Weisung von Herrn Hofrat Dir. Ing. Schiller und auf Initiative von Herrn OAR. Ing. A. Stanzl (Baumschutz) und Herrn OAR. Ing. A. Lesel (Betriebskoordination) wurde die Wiedererrichtung im Städtischen Berufschulgarten in die Wege geleitet.
Der Abbau des Pavillons erfolgte im Oktober 1998, danach wurde er in der Zentralwerkstätte der MA 42 zwischengelagert.
Unter der Leitung von Herrn Wkm. W. Meierhofer wurde der Pavillon in den Wintermonaten 1998/99, mit großem Einsatz der Mitarbeiter, insbesondere der Tischler, renoviert und teilweise nachgebaut. Zwischen Juli und Oktober des Jahres 1999 konnte er schließlich im Schulgarten aufgestellt werden.

Heute ist der elegante Pavillon ein sehr beliebtes Fotomotiv für Hochzeitspaare.

The history of the Kagran Pavilion

In the summer of 1998, a member of the MA 42 - Vienna City Gardens, Department of Tree Protection was ordered to the garden Cobenzlgasse 109 - a routine visit for a tree removal. The owner of the property, Mr. Friedrich Gross, came up with a surprise. On his estate was an original pavilion of the Vienna World Fair in 1873.
The wood-metal construction had suffered after 125 years, but the structure was still preserved in its basic substance. According to stories by Mr. Gross, the gazebo with the three roofs and the idiosyncratically artfully shaped weathercock formerly stood in the immediate vicinity of the rotunda on today's exhibition grounds in the Prater. It may well have witnessed there the whole splendor of the World's Fair. Unfortunately, it was not possible to clarify which use the building had. It is possible that the pavilion was in a nation garden. Another possibility would be the use as a music or coffee house pavilion.

The renovation of the building would have required a larger sum of money, which a private person can hardly invest. But if something had not happened soon, the brittle wood would not have lasted much longer. To save the artwork from decay, Mr. Gross thankfully decided to leave the pavilion to the City of Vienna.
On the instructions of Mr. Hofrat Dir. Ing. Schiller and on the initiative of Mr. OAR. Ing. A. Stanzl (tree protection) and Mr. OAR. Ing. A. Lesel (Operations Coordination) initiated the re-establishment in the municipal vocational school garden.
The pavilion was dismantled in October 1998, after which it was temporarily stored in the MA 42 central workshop.
Under the direction of Mr. Wkm. W. Meierhofer the pavilion was renovated and partially rebuilt in the winter months of 1998/99, with great dedication of the staff, especially the carpenters. Between July and October of the year 1999 it was finally placed in the school garden.

Today, the elegant gazebo is a very popular photo opportunity for wedding couples.
