"Jeanette Evans was multitasking. During a late-morning stop at the Fort Klamath Post Office Monday, Evans was picking up mail, chatting with neighbors she normally sees only at the post office, and signing get-well and condolence cards.
"It's a very personal part of our community," Evans said, noting cards for community members celebrating new babies and offering condolences for family deaths are routinely placed on the post office counter. "This is really a community gathering spot and it's going to be even more so with the other closures."
Across the road, the Fort Klamath Store, which opened in the late 1800s, was closing its doors. Because of economic setbacks, Monday was its final day of business. If and when the store will reopen is unknown. Down the block, Jo's Motel, Campground and Organic Store & Deli, the community's only other store, is closing for the winter.
Evans and other residents are anxious because the Fort Klamath Post Office is on the United States Postal Service's possible closure list. A hearing held in mid-October drew people from around the Wood River Valley." (
