Philip Schuyler, cited as the mansion's principal architect, was in London during the house's early construction, which was overseen by his close friend and mentor Colonel John Bradstreet. Surviving documents indicate the family moved there by 1766. Prominently sited on a gently sloping hill overlooking the Hudson River, the Georgian mansion on 125 acres would have appeared as a commanding edifice when first spied by travelers approaching Albany. Today, over 250 years later, it is difficult to imagine the 18th century landscape; the topography has ben altered, the once pastoral landscape no longer exists, and the city has expanded to engulf the Schuller's estate.

"Schuyler Mansion was home to Philip J. Schuyler, the renowned Revolutionary War general, US Senator, and business entrepreneur. He and his wife, Catharine Van Rensselaer, descended from affluent and powerful Dutch families. Together they raised eight children in this home. The Georgian structure, reflecting Schuyler's English tastes - was built on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River. "
