Saint Antoine
C'était un jeune homme riche, propriétaire terrien en Haute-Égypte. Mais la question de son salut le tourmentait. Préoccupé par ce qu'il avait lu dans les Actes des Apôtres qui décrivent la première communauté chrétienne où tout était en commun, il entre dans une église. saint Antoine le Grand par Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664)Et c'est là qu'il entend l'Évangile du jeune homme riche. Il est saisi par la coïncidence: ce texte s'adresse à lui, pense-t-il, et aujourd'hui même. Il distribue sa fortune aux plus pauvres et se retire quelque temps après dans le désert de Nitrie, habitant un fort militaire abandonné.
Là, pendant plus de vingt ans, il subira les attaques du démon qui prend l'apparence de bêtes féroces ou sensuelles. Ce sont les célèbres tentations de saint Antoine.
Des disciples viennent le rejoindre et, pour eux, il organise une vie monastique en même temps qu'érémitique. C'est pourquoi il est considéré comme "le père des moines".
Attentif à la vie contemporaine de l'Église, il se rend à Alexandrie pour soutenir les controverses contre les païens et les hérétiques ariens. Le père des moines s'éteint à 105 ans.

Ses représentations
La vie de saint Antoine et ses tentations ont inspiré de nombreux artistes, notamment Jérôme Bosch, Pieter Brueghel, Jacques Callot, Dali, Max Ernst, Matthias Grünewald, Diego Vélasquez.
Gustave Flaubert lui a également consacré un récit La Tentation de saint Antoine. Les artistes ont aussi souvent représenté sa rencontre avec saint Paul de Thèbes, peu de temps avant la mort des deux ermites (cathédrale de Chartres). L'œuvre la plus célèbre liée à saint Antoine demeure le retable d'Issenheim, peint par Matthias Grünewald et issu du couvent des Antonins d'Issenheim. Le retable est aujourd'hui conservé au musée d’Unterlinden de Colmar (Alsace).
Saint Antoine et le cochon De nombreuses représentations du saint nous le montrent accompagné d'un cochon portant une clochette. Il est ainsi parfois appelé en Italie Antonio del porco ou « saint Antoine des cochons » dans la vallée de la Bruche en Alsace. Selon Émile Mâle6 qui signale que cette tradition date de la fin du xive siècle, le cochon n'a rien à voir avec la vie du saint mais avec un ordre religieux fondé en Dauphiné en 1095 (les Antonins) : les porcs n'avaient pas le droit d'errer librement dans les rues, à l'exception de ceux des Antonins, reconnaissables à leur clochette. À noter cependant que les démons, qui ont tourmenté le saint, ont, dans un premier temps, été représentés par des animaux sauvages (lion, ours, etc.) puis sous la forme d'animaux plus familiers comme le loup et le sanglier, ce dernier pouvant expliquer le lien avec le cochon.

Saint Antoine
He was a rich young man, landowner in Upper Egypt. But the question of his salvation tormented him. Concerned by what he had read in the Acts of the Apostles describing the first Christian community where everything was in common, he entered a church. Saint Anthony the Great by Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664)And it is there that he hears the Gospel of the rich young man. He is seized by coincidence: this text is addressed to him, he thinks, and even today. He distributed his fortune to the poorest and retired some time later to the desert of Nitria, living in an abandoned military fort. There, during more than twenty years, he will undergo the attacks of the demon which takes the appearance of ferocious or sensual beasts. These are the famous temptations of Saint Anthony.
Disciples come to join him and, for them, he organizes a monastic life at the same time as eremitical. That is why he is considered "the father of the monks". Attentive to the contemporary life of the Church, he went to Alexandria to support the controversies against the pagans and heretics arians. The monks' father died at 105.

His representations
The life of Saint Anthony and his temptations inspired many artists, notably Jérôme Bosch, Pieter Brueghel, Jacques Callot, Dali, Max Ernst, Matthias Grünewald, Diego Velasquez. Gustave Flaubert also devoted a story to him, The Temptation of Saint Anthony. The artists also often represented his meeting with Saint Paul of Thebes, shortly before the death of the two hermits (Chartres Cathedral). The most famous work related to Saint Anthony remains the Issenheim altarpiece, painted by Matthias Grünewald and taken from the Antonine convent in Issenheim. The altarpiece is now in the Musée d'Unterlinden in Colmar (Alsace).
Saint Antoine and the pig
Numerous representations of the saint show him accompanied by a pig carrying a bell. In Italy it is sometimes called Antonio del porco or "Saint Anthony of the pigs" in the Bruche valley in Alsace. According to Emile Mâle6 who points out that this tradition dates from the end of the 14th century, the pig has nothing to do with the life of the saint but with a religious order founded in Dauphiné in 1095 (the Antonines): pigs were not allowed to roam freely in the streets, except those of the Antonines, recognizable by their bell. Note however that the demons, who tormented the saint, were initially represented by wild animals (lion, bear, etc.) and then in the form of more familiar animals such as the wolf and the boar, the latter being able to explain the link with the pig.
