Payson is a ranching community in the Tonto Forest in central Arizona. It remained isolated from the larger world until the first highway was built in the 1950's. A post office was constructed in the late 1800's and the town took its name from the congressman who approved the post office. For many years mail arrived by horseback either from Globe, far to the south or Flagstaff to the north. A nearby marker lists the names of those who rode the mail route, Payson's own pony express.
