L’Arsenal fait partie des travaux entrepris par Vauban pour renforcer les défenses militaires de la ville. Il fut construit de 1692 à 1693. Ses murs très épais étaient percés d’étroites fenêtres. Sa solide charpente en chêne devait supporter le poids énorme des munitions.
UTILISATION
Le matériel lourd était rangé au rez-de-chaussée et les munitions à l’étage. Un pont partant de cet étage donnait un accès direct à la Sambre facilitant ainsi l'approvisionnement en munitions acheminées par bateaux.
L’Arsenal fut utilisé par l’armée jusqu'à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Abandonné pendant plusieurs années, il fut classé en 1972 au patrimoine exceptionnel de Wallonie et restauré.
Het arsenaal maakt deel uit van het werk van Vauban om de militaire verdediging van de stad te versterken. Het werd gebouwd van 1692 tot 1693. De zeer dichte muren hadden smalle ramen. Het massief eiken frame moest het enorme gewicht van de munitie dragen.
GEBRUIK
Op de begane grond werd zwaar materieel opgeslagen en op de bovenverdieping munitie. Een brug vanaf deze verdieping gaf directe toegang tot de Samber, waardoor de aanvoer van over zee vervoerde munitie werd vergemakkelijkt.
Het arsenaal werd gebruikt door het leger tot het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het werd enkele jaren verlaten en werd in 1972 geklasseerd als uitzonderlijk erfgoed in Wallonië en gerestaureerd.
