Cormoran Strike is a private investigator and has an assistant, Robin Ellacott. Robin receives a woman’s severed leg in the post, together with a message quoting from a song that was a favourite of Cormoran’s late mother. Cormoran identifies four suspects from his past, Terrence Malley, a gangster with a penchant for mailing body parts, Noel Brockbank, a serial paeodophile, Donald Laing, a wife abuser, and Jeff Whittaker, Strike’s step father who was acquitted of the murder of Strike’s mother, Leda.

The police focus on Malley whilst Cormoran and Robin look into recent correspondence they have had. They find a letter from a woman with body dysmorphia that had requested Cormoran’s help in amputating her own leg. The police confirm that the leg belongs to her. Some time later a package is received with a toe in it and more lyrics. Further body parts are received over time. The killer is nicknamed the Shacklewell Ripper.

Strike sets about tracing his suspects. Brockbank is traced, via his service pension payments, to Barrow in Furness. The payments are being made to Holly Brocklebank, Noel’s twin sister. Holly is taking Noel’s pension to keep quiet about his paedophilia. Robin gets an address where Noel is working. In Melrose, a neighbour of Laing puts Strike in contact with the parents of Laing’s ex wife, Rona. Strike and Robin trace Laing to Corby, where they find an ex girlfriend of his, Lorraine. Lorraine gives Strike a recent photograph to help him in his search. Laing has changed radically since Strike last arrested him. He now suffers from psoriatic arthritis and is now moody but non violent. Whittaker is traced to London where he is pimping and selling drugs.

Whittaker is tailed by Strike and Robin on a shift basis. Robin befriends one of Whittaker’s girls. The girl leads Robin to believe Whittaker is not the killer. On her way back from meeting the girl Robin is attacked by the real ripper. She suffers a deep gash to the arm. She later intervenes in Brockbanks abuse of his girlfriend and her daughters. This action gets Strike into trouble with the police and he sacks Robin.

Strike continues the case and finds that Laing has become the boyfriend of the amputee woman’s sister. He breaks into Laing’s flat and is attacked by Laing. Laing is handed over to the police. At the end of the case Strike dashes to Masham to see Robin get wed.
