Ellie Clayton is found strangled on rocks in a local park. She was supposed to be going to her friends house after rehearsals of a play. A witness says he saw a scruffy blue car nearby owned by a man in a leather jacket and a cap. Simon Harris, a business partner of Ellie’s dad, says that he had to eject an older boyfriend of Ellie from the house. Ellie’s friend Becca didn’t think Ellie had a boyfriend.
DC Blackstone and DS Winsome go to interview Owen Pierce, the director of the theatre group Ellie attended. Whilst there DC Blackstone takes a phone call and goes out into the hall where he sees a leather jacket and cap hanging up. Outside is a scruffy blue car. Pierce is arrested and charged with murder.
At trial Pierce is acquitted after a clever barrister gets DC Blackstone to admit that he was alone when the evidence was found, making the evidence inadmissible. When Pierce gets home his house has been trashed and he is suffering from burns inflicted whilst in remand in custody.
The police reopen the investigation and take in Tyler Judd for questioning. Judd was Ellie’s boyfriend. Becca comes forward and admits that Judd had tried to abduct her in the past. Later Becca is found dead at a druid’s circle. Judd is arrested and his flat searched. In his flat is a lighter belonging to Simon Harris. Judd tells the police that he and Ellie had taken Harris’s car for a joyride. He had taken the lighter, but Ellie had taken a camera. Banks makes the connection that what is on the camera is key. A new search of the murder scene reveals the camera disk. On it are inappropriate photos of Ellie taken secretly by Harris. When confronted Harris admits to the murders.
