"Hula bezeichnete 1948 diese freistehenden Totenleuchten als die „älteste Form“ des Bildstocks. Er ist charakterisiert durch einen polygonalen (meist achtseitigen) Schaft, ein polygonales mehr- oder gegenseitig geöffnetes Lichtgehäuse sowie einen polygonalen Pyramidenhelm. Hula bezeichnete diese Totenleuchte auch als „französischen Typ“, da die frühesten und gleichzeitig imposantesten Spuren dieser Tradition im Westen Frankreichs zu finden sind.
Im Innenhof des Brixner Domkreuzgangs befindet sich eine gotische Totenleuchte aus der Zeit um 1500."

"In 1948, Hula described these free-standing death lamps as the "oldest form" of the wayside shrine. It is characterized by a polygonal (mostly octagonal) shaft, a polygonal multi- or mutually opened light housing and a polygonal pyramid helmet. Hula also called this death lamp the "French type", as the earliest and at the same time most impressive traces of this tradition can be found in western France.
In the courtyard of the cloister of Brixen Cathedral there is a Gothic death lamp from around 1500."
