The granite courthouse was built in 1857 and has a double height courtroom entered through a central projecting porch and is flanked by offices for clerks and judges. The original slate roof has been replaced by corrugated iron.
The building is notable for its association with the first trial of Ned Kelly, and ceased being used for judiciary business in 1989
