Reaching Out is one of many life size bronze sculptures displayed in Red Deer and is part of the "Ghosts of Red Deer series. The Ghosts series is one of the largest life-size bronze sculpture collections in Canada.

Reaching Out - 1999

A brother helps his younger sister climb onto a granite boulder. In this 1940s scene, the girl wears a leg brace, the result of polio. The sculpture was created to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Downtown Rotary Club and to draw attention to Rotary International’s PolioPlus program.

“Reaching Out”
Artist: Eldon Neufeld

Disabled by polio in 1953, this girl’s climb is hindered by a leg brace. Her brother lends a helping hand.

To help eradicate polio, Rotary funded the vaccination of over two billion children during a twenty year period.

In its ongoing commitment to this community’s youth and seniors, Rotary Club of Red Deer commissioned this sculpture on the 75th anniversary of its Chapter granted February 23, 1923.

Red Deer was then the smallest community in the world having a Rotary Club.
