This is a most interesting decorative bench located in front of the art gallery. We have traveled extensively though British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan and every time we pass through the area we notice these iconic prairie sentinels disappearing.
“End of the Line: Red Deer Elevator Row”
Artist: Karen Ho Fatt – 2011
Inspired by the history of our area and recognizing the “MAG” as a promoter of both art and history, this series of grain elevators celebrates both our art and history.
These prairie icons are quickly disappearing and being replaced with the larger concrete inland terminals seen today. While one elevator appears complete the others are titled or only partially clad to reflect the decay and destruction of the sentinels.
The bench seating references the rail line as it meandered across the plains tying the small communities together. Their colours are reminiscent of ones often used by grain companies for these structures.
It is interesting to note that an early rail spur ran from 49 Street south to the old Fair Grounds, traversing this very spot.
