Im Wald Kottenforst-Ville bei Buschhoven liegt eine historische Flugzeug-Absturzstelle.

Am 23.12.1944 gegen 12:15 stürzte hier ein amerikanischer Jäger vom Typ Republic P-47D-28 "Thunderbolt" nach einem Gefecht mit deutschen Jägern ab. Dem Pilot soll es zuvor gelungen sein, einen deutschen Bf 109 in Brand zu schießen. Dabei geriet aber sein eigenes Flugzeug ebenfalls in Brand und der Pilot musste sich per Fallschirm retten.

Nach Kriegsende 1947/1948 suchten amerikanische Behörden an der Absturzstelle vergeblich nach den sterblichen Überresten des Piloten. Man fand weder Überreste des Flugzeugs noch des Piloten und ging davon aus, dass diese vollständig zerstört wurden. Erst Mitte der 90er Jahre konnten bei neuen Forschungen erste identifizierbare Flugzeugteile geborgen werden. 2015/2016 folgten aufwändige Ausgrabungsarbeiten um weitere Flugzeugteile zu bergen, der Verblieb des Piloten blieb aber weiterhin ungeklärt.

Die Absturzstelle ist an den angegeben Koordinaten von einem Waldweg aus zu sehen. Der Wald ist ein Naturschutzgebiet und die Wege sollten nicht verlassen werden.

On December 23, 1944 at 12:15 an American fighter of the type Republic P-47D-28 "Thunderbolt" crashed here after a fight with German aircrafts. Reportedly, the pilot has previously managed to shoot a German Bf 109 on fire. However, his own plane also caught fire and the pilot had to parachute.

After the war ended in 1947/1948, American authorities searched at the crash site in vain for the remains of the pilot. There were no remains of the aircraft or the pilot found and it was assumed that they were completely destroyed. It was not until the mid-90s that the first identifiable parts of the aircraft could be retrieved in new research. Extensive excavation work followed in 2015/2016 to recover more parts of the aircraft, but the pilot's legacy remained unclear.

The crash site can be seen at the given coordinates from a forest path. The forest is a nature reserve and the trails should not be left.
