Cooper County Jail was the longest operating County Jail in Missouri. It was in use from 1848 to 1878. It isn't anyplace you would want to be incarcerated very long. It is dark no heat no air conditioning. One of the cells was used to hold slaves before they were auctioned off.
Attached to the jail is the old sheriffs home. The sheriffs wife also had to cook for the inmates. Behind the jail is the hanging barn. When someone was hung it was a big social event. Times have changed for the better.
The jail is also said to be haunted.
