Text of the plaque:
You are standing in the front of the first of a chain of five springs that feed Beargrass Creek. The spring branch flow transects the cemetary into east and west and runs through what was called the ravine on old Cave Hill Farm. The lake in front of the Administration Office overflows from the springs and empties into Beargrass Creek which is adjacent to the cemetary wall at Payne St. and Lexington Rd. The ravine was the dividing line between the western burial sections opened prior to 1900 and the newer eastern that were opened in the 20th century.
Around 1890 the ravine area was graded and with filled with soil to form the beautiful series of lakes. The spring maintain Cave Hill's lake water levels during times of drought. Walton's Spring, at the end of the lower lake in Twin Lakes, was named for the Walton family that occupied a Civil War storehouse in the 1860's just above the spring.
The spring branch of Beargrass Creek divides the cemetery into what is known as the new (eastern) and old (western) parts.
I actually fond this location while Earthcaching.
