L’église Saint-Loup située dans le cœur historique de Namur, constitue un des joyaux de l’art baroque des anciens Pays-Bas méridionaux. Edifiée entre 1621 et 1645 par l’architecte Pieter Huyssens, frère de la Compagnie de Jésus, elle constitue une traduction fidèle des préceptes de la Réforme catholique ou Contre-réforme du XVIe engagée par le Concile de Trente. L’ancien collège voisin, construit à partir de 1610, illustre par contre la tradition constructive mosane par son caractère austère et fonctionnel, tout en brique et pierre bleue. Il forme, avec l'église, un vaste ensemble implanté au XVIIe siècle dans la trame médiévale de la ville.
De Saint-Loup kerk in het historische hart van Namen is een van de juwelen van de barokke kunst van het oude Zuid-Nederland. Gebouwd tussen 1621 en 1645 door de architect Pieter Huyssens, broeder van de Sociëteit van Jezus, is het een getrouwe vertaling van de leefregels van de katholieke Reformatie of Contrareformatie van de 16e eeuw geïnitieerd door het Concilie van Trente. Het oude buurcollege, gebouwd uit 1610, daarentegen, illustreert de Mosane-constructieve traditie door zijn sobere en functionele karakter, alles in baksteen en blauwe steen. Het vormt, samen met de kerk, een uitgestrekt complex geïmplanteerd in de XVIIe eeuw in de middeleeuwse frame van de stad.
The Saint-Loup church in the historic heart of Namur is one of the jewels of the baroque art of the ancient southern Netherlands. Built between 1621 and 1645 by the architect Pieter Huyssens, Brother of the Society of Jesus, it is a faithful translation of the precepts of the Catholic Reformation or Counter-Reformation of the 16th century initiated by the Council of Trent. The old neighbouring college, built from 1610, on the other hand, illustrates the Mosane constructive tradition by its austere and functional character, all in brick and blue stone. It forms, with the church, a vast complex implanted in the XVIIth century in the medieval frame of the city.
