"American Avocet. The avocet is a long legged shorebird with a slender upturned bill. Their head and neck are rust in the summer and gray in the winter. Its habitat includes shallow marches, mud flats, ponds, alkaline lakes, and estauries. They sweep their bills from side to side along the surface of the water to pick uo crustaceans, aquatic insectd and floating seeds. Lound calls and mobbing of preadtors is a typical defense on breeding grounds."
