This area is the grave site of Arthur Sturgis Hardy, the 4th Premier of Ontario (1896-1899). Born in nearby Mount Pleasant, Arthur was elected to the Legislature of Ontario in 1873. While part of the Cabinet under Premier Sir Oliver Mowat he established Algonquin Provincial Park and Rondeau Provincial Park.
He was given the Premier position by Mowat after he retired however Hardy did not have the energy to keep up with the job, retiring in 1899 and dying from appendicitis in 1901.
His body was actually buried at Greenwood Cemetery until 1935 when it was moved near his home in Mount Pleasant.
