"Our largest grebe with a long graceful neck and long slender bill. Grebes breed on large lakes with tules and other marshy vegetation. They feed by diving underwater, eating fish, mollusks, crustaceans and aquatic insects. The young are know for riding on their parents backs when on the water. The very young are fed adult feathers for nutrition. The western Grebe is famous for its spectacular courtship displays including running together over the water surface and presenting aquatic vegetation to each other,"
