A 1972 Texas Historical Marker stands in front of the depot, but it really only provides a sound-byte, noting that Greenville got a little busier after the railroad arrived:
Missouri, Kansas & Texas (Katy) Railway, whose first train from Denison reached here Oct. 1, 1880. A $5,000 cash bonus and right of way across Hunt County were guaranteed by Greenville men: F.P. Alexander, M.M. Arnold, A. Cameron, J.J. Cooper, J.C. Edmonds, Fred Ende, I.N. Harrison, J.W. Hawkins, J.T. Jenkins, W.C. Jones, J.C. O'Neal, W.G. Perkins, N.I. Ross, Edward Schiff, Sam D. Stinson, Daniel Upthegrove, A.B. Watson, and M.H. Wright.
The Katy, which immediately built on to Mineola, stimulated a boom in Greenville and Hunt County population and economy.
-----
Previously, there had been a railroad museum here, and the depot occasionally hosted holiday events for the Greenville Chamber of Commerce. Today, it stands vacant, but there are signs of repair and restoration. Word is that it has a new owner, and an art museum may open here, sooner than later.
The National Register's Continuation Sheet (see Secondary Website 1) is a fairly comprehensive document, noting that the depot is largely intact, save for the removal of the rotunda in 1950 after a storm damaged it (and there are photos in the Continuation Sheet where the rotunda can be seen and appreciated), and that there have been no dramatic changes since 1920. The final train departed the station in 1965.
While the depot stands near the edge of the business district, when it opened, there was a hotel and other businesses here, and it's only a walk of several blocks from the downtown square.
President Harry S Truman passed through Greenville while campaigning against Thomas E. Dewey in the 1948 US Presidential election, accompanied by Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn, himself from Texas. Audie Murphy enlisted at the post office -- just a block east -- and went off to war from this depot.
