The Horse and Rainbow (formerly The Rainbow Tavern) is situated on Highgate, almost opposite the top of Lowther Street. It is a Grade II listed building. (visit link)

The Horse and Rainbow has a hanging pub sign. The sign depicts a black horse standing in a field with a rainbow in the sky above the horse. The sign has a black frame with the pub name and Craft Union Free House in white lettering on a black background beneath the picture.

According to hearsay mentioned in The Old Cumbria Gazetteer 'This was a 'lending inn' where loans were made to customers. The sign of a black horse was often applied to such inns. An early inn sign had a rainbow over a black horse.' (visit link)

It is one of the older public houses that has stood the test of time, with some records mentioning an inn here as far back as 1638. (visit link)
