The New Inn has a bar, dining area and three rooms for overnight accommodation. The bar offers a selection of beers (including real ales), lagers, wines, spirits and soft drinks. Food is served between 12.00 noon and 6.00pm daily.
The New Inn has a free standing pillory pub sign. The sign depicts a Cavalier with sword drinking from a tankard, with wooden barrels in the background. The Cavaliers were soldiers who supported King Charles the 1st who fought in the English civil war in mid 1600. A cavalier would have long curly hair like King Charles and they would have big hat with a large feather in it.
"Although the inn is no longer new it has changed little outwardly apart from the removal of the old latticed windows. In the kitchen there still remains an old oak cupboard carved 'F I A 1658'.
The eminent judge Sir Alan Chambre was born here in 1739. His father and grandfather both died here.
Soon After Sir Alan's day the house became an inn and in 1796 meetings of the Friendly Society were held on the premises which were advertised as being spacious and with stables to house 50 horses.
In 1811 the proprietor George Chamley advertised a post wagon from Manchester to Glasgow and Edinburgh arriving at Kendal each day, which indicates that in the days of pack horses and stage coaches 'The New Inn' was of some importance." Source: (
