The sculpture commemorates the life of Israel Putnam, a Major General in the Continental Army and Connecticut hero. The state park is the location o Putnam's division of the Continental Army from November 1, 1778 to May 25, 1779.

Description:
General Putnam is seen mounted on a horse which is descending a flight of steps. The horse's head is turned to its proper left side and has an expression of terror. The rider clutches the reins in his proper left hand, with proper right arm raised in defiance. The sculpture sits on a rectangular-shaped base of mortared fieldstone.
