Réalisé entre 1490 et 1505 en reprenant bon nombre d'éléments issus du style Louis XII, il fait l’objet d’un classement au titre des monuments historiques depuis le 21 août 1928.
Il est une des pointes du triangle rohannais (trois grandes forteresses La Chèze, Josselin et Pontivy) qui a pour centre le village de Rohan, le fief nominal de la maison de Rohan dont le château est délaissé au profit des trois autres.
Guéthénoc, cadet de la maison ducale de Bretagne, vicomte de Porhoët, de Rohan et de Guémené, membre de la famille des comtes de Rennes, aurait quitté la motte féodale de Château-Tro en Guilliers pour construire en ce lieu un premier château en bois vers l'an 1008. Il exploite ainsi un site de haute valeur militaire et commerciale comprenant un surplomb rocheux qui domine en à-pic la rivière Oust et correspondant à l'intersection de deux voies romaines : Sipia - Castel-Noec et Vannes - Merdrignac. Son fils Goscelinus donne son nom à la nouvelle forteresse7, Castellum Goscelini, d'où Château-Josselin puis Josselin, le bourg castral qui se développe au pied du château et offre une relative sécurité.

It is first built in the 11th century and rebuilt at various times since. It has been designated as a monument historique since 1928.
Guéthénoc, vicomte of Porhoët, Rohan and Guéméné, began to build the first castle on the site around the year 1008, choosing a rocky promontory overlooking the valley of the Oust. The new fortress was named after Guéthénoc's son, Goscelinus. The name is recorded in the Cartulary of Redon Abbey (1080) as castellum et castrum Goscelini,but already by 1108 it was appearing as Castellum Joscelini.
The site chosen for the castle was excellent from both the commercial and the military points of view, and since the 9th century there had also existed an annual pilgrimage in September to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Bramble (Notre-Dame du Roncier), which added greatly to the wealth of the lords and people of Josselin.
